Derek Chauvin defense lawyers was backed by Minneapolis police union fund. How much did they spend?

It’s been widely reported that Chauvin’s defense was backed by a $1 million Minneapolis police union fund. That claim even made it into the trial itself during the jury selection process when the prosecution said, “I do know the police federation, the union, is funding the defendant’s defense.”

Former police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the death of George Floyd, in a unanimous decision of the jury whose verdict was read this Tuesday (20) in the city of Minneapolis, in the American state of Minnesota. Chauvin, who pleaded not guilty to the three charges he faced, was found guilty on all of them:


  • Manslaughter (when there is no intention to kill) - with a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison;

  • Second-degree murder - with a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison;

  • Third degree murder - with a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.


George Floyd, 46, died on May 25, 2020 in a police raid in which Derek Chauvin participated.


The 12 jurors deliberated for more than 10 hours on Monday (19) and Tuesday until reaching the result, after three weeks of exposing the case in court.


In a clash shown on video, Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee to the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man in handcuffs, for more than nine minutes on May 25, 2020, when he and three fellow officers arrested him. Floyd, who was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a supermarket.


Floyd's death sparked protests against racism and police brutality in many cities across the United States and around the world last year. The Minneapolis court was surrounded by barricades and guarded by National Guard agents.
